  1. Classifying Matter OGT

  2. What is Matter? • Any “ stuff ” that has substance

  3. The Classification Schemes • A scheme gives the chemist a chance to sort elements into precise categories • Elements in the like categories tend to behave in like ways

  4. Kinds of Changes in Matter Physical changes Chemical changes

  5. Physical Changes • We can see these • The matter will change its form • Chemical composition does not change Solid  liquid ice melting Liquid  gas water boiling

  6. Chemical Changes • Matter changes intoanother form • Its atoms are re-arranged • Chemical bonds are broken Rusting Fe  FeO

  7. Pure Substances • These substances have compositions that are the same throughout • Elementsare pure substances • Compounds are pure substances

  8. Elements • Elements have only one kind of atom iron (Fe) copper (Cu) oxygen (O2)

  9. Compounds • Compounds will have more than one kind of atom salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) table sugar (sucrose, C12H22O11) water (H2O)

  10. Mixtures • These are formed when two or more pure substances are combined • The key idea here: • Mixtures can be physically separated • Compounds can not be separated – they are in their purest form

  11. What’s the Difference • Mixtures - can be separated – they are made up of individual compounds • Compounds - cannot be separated – they are already in their purest form

  12. Mixture Separation • Can be separated mechanically • Can be separated chemically
