What is a computer? A computer is an electronic device that receives, processes, and stores data, and produces a result (output). ICT - The Basics
What are computers used for? • Producing documents e.g. letter • Internet e.g. research, shopping • Email (Electronic Mail) • Storing data e.g. music, pictures ICT - The Basics

Start the computer • Press the power button (on button) • The computer will boot up • Log on by entering your username and password Exercise Start up the laptop and log in ICT - The Basics
Desktop • The screen you now see in front of you is called the computer’s desktop. • The desktop is made up of: • Icons • Start Menu ICT - The Basics
Icons • A small picture on the desktop representing a file, folder or application ICT - The Basics
Start menu • Located at bottom left hand of desktop • Enables you to access: • All programs (Applications) • Recently used programs • My documents • My computer • Printers • Control Panel • Log off/Shut down • Demonstration ICT - The Basics
Exercise • Examine your desktop – identify the icons you have • Click the start menu and navigate through the menus ICT - The Basics
Applications • Applications are the programs that run on a PC and allows end users to accomplish one or more specific tasks. • Your computer is made up of a number of different applications. ICT - The Basics
Exercise • Find Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer and Microsoft outlook from the all programs menu and open each of the applications ICT - The Basics
Closing an application • To close an application click the X at the top right hand side of the window • Demonstration • Everyone close Microsoft Word ICT - The Basics

File Management What is a file? • A file is commonly referred to as a document and usually created from within a specific program ICT - The Basics
What is a folder? • A folder is a container for files and a method of organising information • A folder is represented by the following icon: ICT - The Basics
How are files and folders managed? • All the files and folders on your computer are managed via an application called Windows Explorer. • To open windows explorer click on the start menu and click My Computer. • Demonstration of windows explorer. ICT - The Basics
Exercise • Open windows explorer • Identify the N drive – User area ICT - The Basics
Creating a new folder • Open windows explorer • Double click on your user area (N Drive) • Click on the file menu • Select new • Select Folder ICT - The Basics
Exercise • Create 5 new folders in your user area ICT - The Basics
Naming a folder • Open windows explorer • Double click on your user area (N Drive) • Click on the folder you want to name • Select file • Select rename • Type the name of the folder in the highlighted box below your folder icon ICT - The Basics
Exercise • Rename all 5 folders with the following names: • Week 1 • Week 2 • Week 3 • Week 4 • Week 5 ICT - The Basics
Copying a folder • Open windows explorer • Double click on your user area (N Drive) • Click on the folder you want to copy • Select edit • Select copy • Open the area where you want the folder copied to • Select edit • Select paste ICT - The Basics
Exercise • Copy week 1 folder to your My Documents area • Copy week 2 folder to your My Documents area ICT - The Basics
Moving a folder • Open windows explorer • Double click on your user area (N Drive) • Click on the folder you want to move • Select edit • Select cut • Open the area where you want the folder copied to • Select edit • Select paste ICT - The Basics
Exercise • Move your week 3 folder to your My Documents area • Move your week 4 folder to your My Documents area ICT - The Basics
Deleting a folder • Open windows explorer • Double click on your user area (N Drive) • Click on the folder you want to delete • Select file • Select delete • Select yes ICT - The Basics
Exercise • Delete all the folders you have created this evening ICT - The Basics
Exercise • Create 10 folders in your my Documents Area • Name each folder : Week 1 – week 10 ICT - The Basics
Log Off • Log off is the process of ending a session with a computer system. • You need to save any documents before you log off. • You need to close any applications before you log off . ICT - The Basics
Shut Down • Shut down means to terminate all operations • As you can seen on screen you have a log off screen therefore operations are still running on your computer. To completely terminate all operations the computer needs to be shut down. • Demonstration of shut down • Everyone shut down their computer ICT - The Basics
