What is Email? • E-mail (electronic mail) is a method of sending messages and attaching files over the Internet. • E-mail is the Internet’s version of the postal service and a great way to communicate with people. • The best of e-mail is that you can also send a message with attachments. This means you can send text documents, pictures etc. Week 2 - Email
What is an Email address? • An e-mail address identifies a location to which e-mail messages can be delivered • Email addresses are in the form of: user@domain • moboyle662@c2kni.net Week 2 - Email
Everyone has an email address • user@c2kni.net • Your email address can be found on the mailing list Week 2 - Email
Email Application • The application used for Email is Microsoft Outlook • Microsoft Outlook is denoted by the following icon: Week 2 - Email
Exercise • Can everyone open Microsoft Outlook Week 2 - Email
Inbox • What you see now is your inbox • Inbox is the folder that all your incoming email goes to. When you receive a new email you can find it in there. • Your email stays in this box until you either delete it, or move it to another folder. Week 2 - Email

Opening email messages • Bold messages indicate mail that is not opened • To open an email you double click (Click twice with the left hand mouse button) • To close an email you click the X at the top right hand corner of the email window Week 2 - Email
Exercise • Find the email I have sent you, open this email. • Read the email and then close it. Week 2 - Email
Sending an Email • Click on the new button at the top left hand side of the screen • A new message window will appear • This is the template for sending a new email Week 2 - Email

Sending an Email • An email message contains the following information: • Email address of the recipient • Subject title • Message body • Demonstration of how to send an email Week 2 - Email
Exercise • Send an email to the person beside you. • Send an email to me - moboyle662@c2kni.net Week 2 - Email
Replying to an email • When someone sends you an email you can reply to their message. • When replying to an email you do not have to enter the recipients email address. • Demonstration Week 2 - Email
Exercise • Reply to the email your colleague has sent to you. • Reply to the email message I sent you. Week 2 - Email
Forwarding an email • To forward an email means to send a copy of an email to someone else. • This is very useful as you do not have to retype the content of the message. • Demonstration Week 2 - Email
Exercise • Forward an email from your inbox to a colleague Week 2 - Email
Sending an attachment • An email attachment is a computer file which is sent along with an e-mail message e.g. A document, pictures • This is very useful way of sending information that is already prepared. • Demonstration Week 2 - Email
Exercise • Send an email with an attachment to your colleague • Your attachment will be a picture of a computer from your user area in the my pictures folder Week 2 - Email
Downloading an attachment • When an email is received with an attachment it is denoted by a paperclip symbol • An attachment can either be saved or opened. • It is always advisable to save your attachments to your user area. • Demonstration Week 2 - Email
Exercise • Open the email and attachment your colleague has sent to you. • Save the attachment to your user area. Week 2 - Email
Deleting an email • To delete an email means to remove it from your inbox. • You need to delete emails from your inbox to ensure it does not get full. • If your inbox is full you will not receive any incoming mail. • Demonstration Week 2 - Email
Exercise • Delete any unwanted emails from your inbox Week 2 - Email
Final Exercise • Send an email to someone in your class the with an attachment. • The attachment should be the flower picture from your user area in the my pictures folder. Week 2 - Email
