  2. NOT national standards “For states, by states” Based on NRC’s Framework for K-12 Science Education First time the underlying science concepts and the standards (Performance Expectations) are distinct. Developed by lead states, NRC, NSTA, AAAS and Achieve. What is NGSS?

  3. Lead States 26 Lead states Give “serious consideration to adopt fully” All states are considering adoption except AK & TX

  4. Last national science standards were published in 1996 – didn’t really work out. NGSS is not curriculum or science content. It’s a set of student outcomes or Performance Expectations (PEs). “Common Core” standards for science? Yes and no. Why is NGSS important?

  5. Emphasis is placed on the practice of science, not factoids. Cross-cutting concepts are linked throughout. Engineering and technology are integrated into each discipline. Why is NGSS so cool?

  10. NGSS and Climate Change Climate change and human impacts on Earth systems play a big role. Earth and Space Science (ESS one of 3 disciplines with Life Science and Physical Science. So exciting to see ESS get equal attention (but will it stick?)
