  1. Decoded By Jay-Z

  2. Old Friends “This refers to old friends on the street and in the rap game who still think of me as their sidekick or protégé … that may be who I was but I grew up and I became my own man, and thay happened a long time ago” (Jay-Z 103) At this point in the book Jay-Z had only explained his earlier songs, and when he said the quote above he declared that he had made it in the industry and he was completely independent.

  3. Success “What do I think of success, it sucks too much stress” (Jay-Z 103) At this point in the book, Jay-Z was discussing his success in life. He believes there is a lot of stress put onto his life now that he had made it, but he would rather be successful than in the projects in Brooklyn. It gives the reader insight into Jay-Z as a person showing that he is not obsessed with being famous, but that he is is just grateful

  4. Inner Demons “I’m making the point here that poverty, as bad as it is, was one reason I started hustling again, but there were deeper reasons, demons that I had stemming from abandonment” ( Jay-Z 301) In this part of the book Jay-Z admits that him being poor lead to him to selling drugs, but he had inner problems from his father leaving him that resulted in him not having the direction of a man in his life so acted out. Again you can see into who he really is, he can be hurt too no matter how hard he puts himself out there to be.

  5. Beach Chair “What’s clear here is that being ‘about my paper’ is not being all about money, but being all about the drive for success 24/7 … So already I’m sort of contradicting or at least complicating the idea that ‘life’s beach chair’” ( Jay-Z 283) Jay-Z again shows how he has a drive for success. He feeds of it, it is basically the center of his life.

  6. The announcement “It’s just not the material spoils that keep you going: You start getting addicted to the thrill of it” At this point in the book Jay-Z is defining why he likes to be a musician and how he like performing live. You can see he truly loves what he does
