Essential question • What is the affect of gender discrimination on women in Saudi Arabia and how can they become more equal in their society?
Culture • “It’s the culture, not the religion” • Rights are violated due to culture • Tribal customs overpower rights to women in Qur’an • Women’s rights defined by the Qur’an’s words and tribal customs
Women’s rights/problems • Women cannot leave country because they cannot obtain passports. • Cannot open bank account the • Cannot drive • Women will be able to vote in 2015 • Sexual segregation is expected • Don’t receive equal jobs
Driving ban • Women in Saudi Arabia have been banned from driving for multiple reasons • Men believe allowing such freedoms could encourage premarital sex • The woman fear harsh punishment if they do drive • Hundreds of women have been fined, arrested, and even whipped for driving • This driving ban takes away their leadership and voice

Religious reasoning • Men’s perspective on women and their rights are taken mostly from the Qur’an • The Quran states that every man is equivalent to two women • The Quran also encourages polygamy, so men can have multiple wives and get rid of one for another
Sexual Segregation • Segregation according to gender is commonly expected in public • There are often separate entrances for men and women in public building • Women and men even have to use

Solutions • The Saudi government to choose to completely go by the word of the Qur’an • Allow women to run for office • Allow Saudi women to compete in the Olympics • Cease the majority of sexual segregation • Allow fair public trial • Police should be unbiased to gender • Additional surveillance for rape victims
