A tornado is basically a violent rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to ground level. • They form from large storms and hit the ground creating an explosion of dust and wreckage on the ground. • You may know a tornado is coming if the sky turns a greenish or black color, debris is falling from the sky, and a funnel shape cloud forms. • It may even start hailing.
Tornadoes form in violent thunderstorms when there is sufficient (1) and (2) wind shears present in the lower atmosphere. • When there is a cold front moving in ahead of the front is warm, moist air with heavy wind, the conditions are right for a tornado. • Large, low hanging dark clouds can also signal the right conditions for a funnel cloud. • When the air becomes electrically charged during a tornado one warning sign is to have your hair stand up when you go outside.
A tornado usually lasts a few minutes. • The shortest last for a few seconds, but the longest and most dangerous can last for over an hour.
Tornadoes mostly last from April to June the most tornadoes usually occur in May. • Tornadoes are often found in the summer time when there is warm weather . • In the US ‘tornado season’ generally is in the spring when tornadoes are more prevalent from April through July, with May and June being the peak months. • Like thunderstorms, tornadoes can form any time of year.
Tornadoes are natures most violent storms but their not as large as hurricanes.
