Maryland’s NEW Virtual School • Parent and Student Overview
Virtual School History • “The National Center for Education Statistics (2008) estimated that the number of K-12 public school students enrolling in a technology-based distance education course grew by 65 percent in the two years from 2002-03 to 2004-05” (USDOE, 2010).
Mission Statement • The new virtual school in Maryland will be created with all students and their individuality in the forefront of the development: • Our mission is to provide students with a strong technology-based educational foundation that increases their desire and ability to become life-long learners as well as succeed in all future endeavors.
The Rollout Plan • The 2012-2013 school year will be the first year the school will be implemented in the elementary schools • By 2014-2015 school year middle school students will be able to enroll • By 2015-2016 school year high school students will enroll • We begin with the elementary school students so they may follow the virtual school through their entire k-12 education
Design and Implementation • The Florida Virtual School is a leading virtual school in the United States. It is our plan to follow their operational design and incorporate their educational philosophy. • We will also follow the Maryland Virtual School policies and procedures to adhere to the Maryland State Department of Education and ISTE Standards.
Learning outcomes at FLVS We chose to follow FLVS in their online educational design because of their success in all programs
Looking forward to new beginnings • As we begin the development of the new virtual school, we look forward to feedback and comments from both students and parents or guardians. • The new virtual school will bring education further to the digital age and bring our students to the front-lines of our future
