INDICATORS FOR MONITORING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT • in addition to economic development indicators, environmental and social indicators are also needed(the issue of sustainable development) • SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS United Nations: Human Development Index (includes the life expectancy at birth index, the education index, the GDP per capita index)

INDICATORS FOR MONITORING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT EU at-risk-of-poverty and social exclusion indicators • so-called Laeken indicators (adopted in 2001) that the Social Protection Committee developed further (income distribution indicators include also the early school leavers indicator, the life expectancy indicator, the employment and unemployment rate indicator; new indicators are being prepared for the fields of health and housing) • Indicators are linked to monitoring the meeting of Europe 2020 main targets (raising the employment rate, higher share of GDP invested in research and development, environmental protection targets – climate and energy, targets in the field of education, reducing the number of people living in poverty by 20 million)

OPEN ISSUES REGARDING INDICATORS • Cause and effect relationship between phenomena described by indicators EXAMPLE: GDP – employment rate – at-risk-of-poverty rate Deterministic model(s) structure of economic and social institutions – PROFESSIONAL ISSUE Alternative model(s) hierarchy of values and objectives – SOCIO-POLITICAL ISSUE

EXAMPLE OF SLOVENIA IN CRISIS Crisis mitigation: • Preserving jobs (25,000+) • Sustainable unemployment + active employment policy (7%, increased funds, SI 4-6 place in the EU) • Raising the minimum wage (25%) • Additional funds for social security (43% over 2008) • At-risk-of-poverty (among the lowest in the EU)
