  2. JROTC Mission “(The) purpose of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps to instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment."

Junior ROTC “Building Better Citizens for America” • 1911 - Founded by US Army • Non-compulsory cadet corps • Aim: better citizenship • 1916 - National Defense Act • Formally established JROTC • 1964 - ROTC Vitalization Act • All services directed to establish program • AF: 20 units by 1966 • 1991 - Congressional Expansion • AF: 609 Units, 92,000+ students • Focus on inner-city and “at-risk” schools • Growing to 3500 DoD units by FY05 • AF: 945 units (27%) • Army 47%, USN 20%, USMC 6%

  4. JROTC Focus • Three or four year program, instills... • Values of citizenship • Community service • Personal responsibility • Sense of accomplishment

JROTC Program • Program includes: • Classroom academic studies • Character Education • Team building • Leadership opportunities • Field trips / training opportunities • What we don’t do: • Recruit for Armed Forces or require service obligation • Conduct combat skills training • Fire military weapons

JROTC Program Goals • Promote patriotism • Develop informed and responsible citizens • Develop habits of orderliness and respect for authority • Develop self-reliance, discipline and leadership • Develop awareness and detailed understanding about aerospace and aerospace-related topics • Develop awareness and understanding of the basic elements of the military and national security • Develop respect for the need for constituted authority in a democratic society

  7. JROTC Program • The Air Force provides: • Educational / audiovisual material • Books, curriculum guides, note taking guides • Unit support and maintenance funds • Uniforms and organizational equipment • Honor guard and drill team equipment • Field trip opportunities
