Executive Committee Update • Proposal coming via email soon to: • Establish only one membership category for faculty in AOE • Invite resident members • Other minor edits • Vote on bylaw changes in February at Quarterly meeting
Educational Scholarship • Deb Bynum’s recent sessions • Visiting professor January 8-9th • Graham McMahon, MD • Sessions morning, noon, and afternoon • Reminder of the poster session at this year’s banquet • May 16th at the Carolina Club
AOE Mission Statement • to promote and support excellence in teaching and the work and career paths of excellent teachers • to promote and fund curricular innovation, evidence-based curricular change and a scholarly approach to the education mission • to provide a forum for education leadership and advice for the Dean, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Vice Dean for Medical Education and the leadership of the curriculum
Work so far • Introductory sessions defining work group process and suggesting topics • Enterprise Computer System: Educational opportunities & challenges • “Service vs. Education”
Work Group Process • Unified voice for UNC Medical Education Community • Consulting role/ voice at the table as key topics are discussed at institutional level • Leader for each sub group • Sub groups generate agenda, educational talking points, and vet ideas with AOE membership
Enterprise Computer System • Ryan Madanick led sub group focused on educational concerns as regards selection & implementation of new computer system • Facilitates easily – cosigned medical student orders • Retention and display of medical student progress notes • Medical student creation of discharge summaries • Fed forward to selection committee and institutional IT leaders
“Service vs. Education” • GME - Do service obligations detract from educational opportunities? • Medical students want more service • Meeting November 28, sub group will • Advocate for system enhancements facilitating residents to spend increased time on patient care/ education • Explore innovations to increase service opportunities for medical students • Draft AOE statement on fundamental role of patient care in medical education • Mike Myers, Kevin Biese, and a medical student leader will co-lead this sub group
Future Directions • Can AOE help standardize role of educational contributions in promotion process? • Can AOE interact with medical alumni and NC physicians to recruit their participation in the medical school? • Can AOE provide input as medical student curriculum is restructured? • Other directions?
