Coffee with the Counselors • Help yourself to some coffee! • Take care of yourself, suffering is optional! • We will begin in 5 minutes. Presented by Tina Milacek and Dusty Wright
Administrators • Provide supervision of children in all areas of the school. • Provide training regarding bullying. • Implement a zero tolerance policy. • Consistently and fairly enforce the school policy on bullying. • Listen receptively to parents who report bullying. • Reward students for positive behavior.
Teachers • Provide students with opportunities to discuss bullying. • Instruct students to recognize unacceptable behavior. • Provide classroom activities and discussions related to bullying. • Develop a classroom action plan about what to do in a bullying situation.
Teacher (cont.) • Take immediate action when bullying is observed or reported. • Confront bullies in private. • Inform parents of both victims and bullies when confrontation occurs. • Refer victim and aggressor to counselor. • Provide protection for bullying victims. • Be proactive when parents report bullying.
Parents • Tell the child that they don’t deserve to be bullied. • Let the child know there is nothing wrong with them. • Work collaboratively with school personnel to address bullying issues. • Arrange a conference with the teacher, principal and counselor if needed. • Use discretion when deciding to speak to a bully’s parents. Confronting a bully’s parents may not accomplish anything.
Parents (cont.) • Offer support to your child, but do not rescue them. • Do not encourage your child to respond aggressively or “strike back”. • Teach your child to use assertiveness and humor when faced with a bullying situation. • Be patient, the situation may not be solved overnight. • If the problem escalates, contact local law enforcement or an attorney.
Students • Seek help from an adult immediately. • Report incidents to school personnel. • Speak up and offer support to the victims. • Privately support those being hurt. • Express disapproval of bullying behavior by not joining in. • Don’t confront the bully.
HERO • Help our students • Empower them to take a stand • Report to teacher/counselor/administration • Observe! Don’t ignore the behavior.
What do we (AISD) do? • District Initiative to combat bullying. • Handbook addition. • Adopt a “Bullying Prevention” program. (PK-12) • Staff development and training. • Parent training and support. • Zero tolerance on all campuses. • Empowering students to take a stand.
