Objectives • By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: • Successfully interface with any interactive whiteboard device, including SMARTBoard, Promethean, StarBoard, and others • Describe how interactive whiteboard technology can be useful in the classroom environment to engage students and present information more clearly • Create lesson plans and instructional activities integrating interactive whiteboard technology

  3. So what defines a “Smartboard”? Interactive whiteboards, often referred to by the most popular brand name, “Smartboard,” are whiteboard surfaces that interface with a computer and projector so users can manipulate the computer interface by touch or electronic pen. Self-contained LCD flat panel Smartboards are also available.

  4. General Uses of Smartboards • Dynamic replacement for traditional whiteboards, chalkboards, or flip charts for lectures and presentations • Students can interact with computer media and programs on a larger scale, collaborate with others, and demonstrate what they know on-demand • Allows user to record what is written and displayed onscreen so that students can go back and view any portion of a lesson • Excellent for teaching computer software and problem-solving skills

Smartboards in the Subject Areas • Language Arts: • Brainstorming, editing, 6+1 Writing Process, highlight words, electronic word walls, e-portfolios • Math: • Create and save formulas, graphs, and equations easily; have students demonstrate problem-solving skills on-the-fly or collaboratively • Social Studies/Science • Show relationships between words and ideas with Inspiration/Kidspiration, manipulate onscreen tools in interactive maps, simulations

  6. Do You Use a Smartboard? • Please share how you use Smartboards in your classroom if you have access to one • Or, if you don’t have access to one, what makes you want one for your classroom? What special advantages do you feel this technology could give you and your students?

  7. Using a Smartboard • The basic functionality of an interactive whiteboard allows you to “touch-click” projections from the computer on the whiteboard, essentially replacing the mouse with your fingertip • Most whiteboards also come with electronic pens for writing and drawing over the screen, and all of your figures can be saved for future viewing • Two minute tutorial videos: http://smarttech.com/trainingcenter/tutorials.asp#

SMART Board Tools • SMART’s program features many of the same features you will find in other software; a list of training materials for all popular interactive whiteboards is found at the end of this presentation • SMART Board Tools features: • Notebook for drawing and writing • Screen Capture (still images) • Recorder (video) • Keyboard (so you don’t have to go back and forth to the PC) • Instant Conferencing with other SMARTBoard users • Calculator • Pointing and highlighting tools

SMART Board Tools • You can draw and write anywhere and the SMART Board Tools can recognize your handwriting and convert it to text, as well as recognize the shapes you create, with the Shape Recognition Pen tool • You can also add sounds or hyperlinks to drawn objects • Many fill effects and colors are available for both shapes and text • Notebook files can be edited at the computer later on if needed, and can be exported as several easily accessible file types, including Web pages, graphic formats, or PDF

SMART Gallery and Online Resources • SMART Notebook comes with a huge gallery of media resources, including pictures, sounds, and videos to enhance your lessons • You can drag and drop gallery media into SMART Notebook pages anytime you need them • Want more?   11. Let’s Experiment! • Let’s take some time to experiment and work with with the Smartboard in small groups • Don’t be shy – explore the software at length to figure out what things do to help you consider what you might like to do in your own class

Integrating Smartboard Technology • Bringing interactive whiteboard technology into the classroom effectively means taking advantage of the Smartboard’s features • For example, when you or your students do presentations, use the pens to highlight important points • Or, bring media from the Notebook Gallery into demonstrations or encourage students to use them to illustrate what they are learning • By their nature, Smartboards allow more than one person to interact with the computer interface, so encourage collaborative assignments

Creating Your Own Lessons • Make them as simple or advanced as you need them to be • Setting up workspaces in the Notebook and saving them in advance allows you to get right into the lesson • Also, don’t forget to save your Notebook files as you do on-the-fly demonstrations and activities in class – you can edit and reuse these anytime you need them again, as well as share them with students who were absent • Need more help? http://www.education.smarttech.com/ste/en-US/Ed+Resource/Lesson+resources/default.htm

Create YOUR Smartboard Lesson! • For the second half of the class, you will develop/adapt your own lesson integrating Smartboard technology • Before we leave for the day, be prepared to present your lesson to the rest of us • Provide for us: • The goals for the lesson (objectives) • What you and students will do during the lesson (activities) • How you will evaluate student learning and technology effectiveness (assessment)
