The Inter-Professional Council Quality of the University Experience (I-QUE) Survey
Presenters • Eric Ley, Fourth Year Medical Student, IPC President, Introduction, Student Demographics & Conclusion • Dave Muller, Third Year Law Student, IPC Speaker, Program Support • April Evans, First Year Medical Student, IPC Vice President, Program Facilities • Renee DeBose, Second Year Medical Student, IPC Senator, Campus Climate & Social Services • AJ Wildman, Second Year Veterinary Student, IPC Secretary, Free Response
Quality Rate the level of excellence in a given area on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) Importance Rate how important the area is to the student on a scale of 1 (not important) to 5 (extremely important) Quality vs. Importance
Grading Policies • “The grading system is ambiguous at best and misleading at worst.”
Parking • “Parking is a huge problem and it just keeps disappearing instead of getting bigger. The hope that more students will use the bus is naïve…We are a culture of cars…”
Student Facilities • “The health sciences library is overused (too many schools and students), so that during undergrad midterms and finals it is too crowded, too loud, and impossible to get a table or study effectively.”
Financial Aid • “I would recommend OSU due to the fact that the education you receive is excellent overall, and the cost is reasonable.”
Faculty • “…professors I’ve had both inside and outside classes were real attentive to my academic and social needs.” • “ The overall experience is OK, but the level of instruction received is excellent.” • “…amazing attitude of the professors…” • “Professors put down students all the time. Whatever happened to positive reinforcement ?” • …despite all its flaws, the faculty here is extremely talented and has a lot of knowledge.”
Diversity • “…diverse background of students, although ethnic and gender differences are limited.” • “I wouldn’t recommend it because of discrimination against foreign students and lack of diverse ethnic groups…” • “…would not recommend this (school) to any student concerned about diversity or culturally sensitive health care.”
Facilities • “It is embarrassing to give tours to interviewers and I can barely stand the uncleanliness. You would think a medical school would understand the importance of sanitation.” • “The cleanliness is disgraceful. The lounge is old and dreary…we need a nice place to relax.” • “Please clean the bathrooms, they look like outhouses.” • “If we had better facilities instead of patched up old buildings, professional schools would be able to hold their heads high instead of their hands out.” • “There is room for improvement in areas of cleanliness and hygiene in a hospital setting.”
Intellectual Environment • “Open-minded, free exchange of ideas is supported and encouraged…” • “Very mixed…some people never stop thinking, probing, questioning, others skip class and just try to pass.” • “Endangered by a ‘Go Bucks’ mentality…” • “Need more emphasis on academic excellence versus sports.” • “Excellent, diverse and creative.” • “I would like the University to simply acknowledge the professional schools. I’m not asking for the coverage the sports get, but an occasional nod.”
Would you recommend OSU ? • “Yes - Mercedes Benz education at a Yugo price.” • “No - the facility is filthy, administrators are poorly responsive, the average lecture is of subpar quality and I am not convinced things are improving.” • “Bad experiences breed discontent… and disenfranchised alumni!” • “Good program, excellent staff/faculty, diversity in program to explore different aspects of my profession!”
Where do we go from here ? • Overall, professional students gave high marks to their professional college’s reputation
