Stress in two syllable words • Except for verbs, two syllable words are stressed on the first syllable 90% of the time. • Reminder: the stressed syllable is loud and clear, and the unstressed syllable is often times the schwa
Words that end with –tion, -sion, and cian • These words sounds all all pronounced as “shun” • For these words, the stressed syllable comes just before the “shun” • Practice! (D)
E: -ic, -ical • Listen to these words. What is the stress rule? • -ic? • -ical?
F: two clear vowels together • When two vowels are next to each other, they are two different syllables, and both of them are clear.
Nouns and verbs: same word, different stress • Many words are both nouns and verbs. • Insult • That is an insult! • Don’t insult me! • What is the stress rule? • The verb is usually stressed on the second syllable.

Vowels • Spelling “ow” Pronunciation “aw” (cow) • Sometimes, “ow” is ow and sometimes it is aw • Listen and repeat
More vowels and spelling • “ew”ad in “uw” (new) • Listen and repeat
