Overview • Outline the new NCCP • Outline WBC & the NCCP –proposed • What we have done to date • Where are the next steps • Unknowns
People in the New NCCP • Learning Facilitators (LF’s) • Master Learning Facilitators (MLF’s) • Evaluators • Master Evaluators • Certified coaches • Trained coaches
Athlete Development Model & Coach Development Model Comp HP Community Coach Comp HP Comp Dev Comp Int Advanced Comp Int Community Coach
Competition Introduction Pathway TRAINED COMPETITON INTRODUCTION COACH
TRAINED COMPETITON INTRODUCTION COACH CERTIFIED COMPETITON INTRODUCTION COACH
5 Year Certification • Certification lasts 5 years only • Maintenance of certification is based upon active coaching and professional development
5 Year Certification Minimum Professional Development Credits Required Credit / Point Examples
Making Ethical Decisions - MED • MED is the cornerstone of the New NCCP Competition Stream • It is required by all coaches regardless of previous level in old-NCCP • Trained = MED Module • Certified = MED Module + MED evaluation
Multi-Sport Modules • Integration of modules into Competition Introduction – why? • Must take MSM through the Provincial Coaching Association for Competition Development – Replacement of Old Level III Theory
The Norms • There are certain norms within CAC and what other sports are doing • PSO’s are responsible for: LF’s, evaluators, courses • NSO is responsible for: MLF’s, ME’s development • We are able to adjust and tweak with what fits our sport
So what has WBC done so far... • Complete development of coach materials for Community Coach, Comp Int, Comp Int Advanced, Comp Dev. • Complete development of LF materials for Comp Int, Comp Int Advanced and Comm Coach • Pilot of Competition Introduction x3 • Pilot of Competition Introduction – Advanced (1) • Pilot of Competition Development (1) • Very Positive feedback
Community Coach • Collaboration with Canada Basketball • What does it look like? • What will the role of the PSO be? • When will it be ready? • Who should be taking it?
Next Steps • Re-evaluate all developed material • Re-evaluate course set-up • Creation of the NCCP committee • Decisions to be made: • Transfer policies – within NCCP standards • MLFs, LFs, MEs, Es (applications, who, experience, qualifications) • Pathway • Maintenance of certification standards and plan • Professional development opportunities • Rollout plan when, where, how will coaches in our country get trained and evaluated in our sport? • Risk Management plan – What would we do without Tim? Succession plan for MLF’s & LF’s • Fee Structure • Quality Control of LF’s and Evaluators • Impact Assessment – how effective is the training? • LF : Coach candidate : Athlete Ratios Continued...
Next Steps • Context Approval Process (CAP) for each course • Conditional Approval • Final Approval
How does WBC see the progression? • How many clinics? • How many LF’s, E’s? • Time Frame Surveys & assessments – Nov 2010 Committee creation x 2 – Nov 2010 Development Committee review – Jan 2011 Policy Committee review – Jan 2011 Final Development Committee review – Mar 2011 Final Policy Committee Review – Mar 2011 CAP CC – Apr 2011 CAP IC – May 2011 CAP Comp Dev – June 2011 CAP ICA – July 2011 Full Implementation – Fall 2011
I have been certified in the old NCCP before... • What do my levels give me? • What is necessary to upgrade? Replace? • NCCP Minimum standards combined with WBC standards • Example; CAC, “Coach has Level 1 certification will be granted – at a minimum TRAINED status in either Community Coach or Competition Introduction. • Can ONLY be assigned TRAINED or CERTIFIED in Community Coach or Competition Introduction” • WBC will then have a policy that states; “all Level 1 Certified coaches will receive CERTIFIED status in Community Coach & IN TRAINING status for Competition Introduction”** for example
Keys to note • If a coach has only Theory 1 and / or 2, they receive no status in the New NCCP • Level III transfer has not been finalized yet with CAC • Levels IV & V are targeted for June 2011
Potential Problems / Unknowns • How / who manages it all • Numbers, numbers, numbers • How many top-level coaches do we have to fill the role of LF’s? • How many evaluators can we have without doubling up • LF’s and evaluators should be different in different streams • How do we evaluate a coach in Moosonee, ON? • How can we expect a coach in Saint John, NB to take a course when the closest one offered is in Montreal? (not a new problem) • How can we be expected to run courses with 2-3 attendees? (not a new problem) • Ensuring we have the right athletes at that stage for the coach to work with • How do we ensure the program is able to sustain itself financially? • What do we do if we don’t have Tim?
What does the PSO need now? What does your membership want now? • What are the PSO needs? • Community vs. Competition • LF’s, Evaluators, courses • Are you comfortable with a single LF in your province and who that LF is?
Misc. • Building of the toolkit resource • Funding through your Provincial Coaching Association • Important to note that what we have provided this past 6 months is NOT the norm (cost sharing etc.) • We have one chance to do this and to do it right
