  1. Agenda 03-24-2014 Introduction “Recycled Car” Project Plan and Design: “Recycled Car” Project Journal Review

  2. “Recycled Car” Project Due date: April 11th

  3. Objective • Students will be able to: • design and build a working car, with recycled material, safe enough to carry and protect an egg during a crash. • evaluate the design of the recycled car by comparing its features with those of cars made by other teams.

  4. Project Components • The Recycled Car • Written Report • Presentation to the class • Report • Recycled car • Crash test

  5. Recycled Car: Requirements • The recycled car must: • Have an original name • Be unique and well design (presentable). • Run properly • Protect an egg (driver) in crashes • Have data • Design and conduct an experiment to determine the average speed of the car (at least 5 trials).

  6. Recycled Car: Rules • Your car must work properly and all the parts must stay together at all times. • You need to use, at least, three different recycled materials. • You need to build the frame and add axles and wheels. • Wheels, axles and frames from other cars are not permitted. X

  7. Recycled Car: Rules • Your car must carry an egg safely down a race track and protect it during a crash against a barrier. • The design must allow for easy setting, removal and inspection of the egg (driver). • Your car will be tested using a specific track. So it cannot be larger than the following dimensions: • Width = max. 6.5 cm, including axels and wheels • Length = max. 16.5 cm. Length ≤ 16.5 cm Width ≤ 6.5 cm

  8. Written Report Content • Recycled Car Name and Team members • Purpose of the Project • Materials • Procedure • Sketch, diagram or picture of the car showing its parts, dimensions and the recycled materials used. • Data table “Recycled-Car Speed” (show all calculations) and a graph. • “Safety Test” results (egg survives the crash). • Discussion (answers to questions with complete sentences).

  9. Presentation • Individually or in group (max. 4 students per group). Each member must work and present. • Present your car by name. • Show that your car works. A ramp will be provided for the crash test (egg). • Answer the questions proposed for discussion. • The project with the highest score will represent the class at the grade level competition.

  10. Presentation: Discussion Questions • How did you come up with the idea for your car? What makes your car unique? How did you create the name of your car? What inspired the name? • How did you design your car? What materials did you choose? Why? • Did you have to change the design of your car at any point? Why? Explain. • How did you determine the speed of your car? • How did you test your car for crash safety?

  11. “Recycled Car” Project Rubric Scale: 4 Above and Beyond 3 Complete and Correct • Incomplete 1 Incorrect Science 0 No answer • Domains • Research (6): Project includes a complete report. The report includes purpose, materials, procedure, data table (at least five trials) and answers to discussion questions. • Accuracy (4): Car works properly (does not fall apart), has the required size and is safe (protects driver/egg). It includes at least three recycled materials andsketch with labels. Creativity (4): Model is unique, well designedand has an originalname. Grammar (2): Correct spelling and punctuation is used in the report. Presentation (4): All members participate during the presentation, run the test successfully and answer all discussion questions. TOTAL 20points

  12. “Recycled Car” Project Checklist • 1. Recycled Car • Has an original name • Is unique and well design (presentable) • Works properly and all the parts stay together at all times • Made with, at least, three different recycled materials • Has a frame with axles and wheels built and designed by the team (wheels, axles and frames from other cars are not permitted) • Protects an egg (driver) in crashes • Allows for easy setting, removal and inspection of the egg (driver) • Has the following dimensions: • Width = max. 6.5 cm, including axels and wheels • Length = max. 16.5 cm • Has data: experiment to determine the average speed of the car (at least 5 trials).

  13. “Recycled Car” Project Checklist • 2. Written Report • Has a cover page that includes • Recycled car name • Team members • Period • Date • Purpose of the Project • Materials and Procedure • Sketch, diagram or picture of the car showing its parts, dimensions and the recycled materials used. • Data: • Table “Recycled-Car Speed” 0ncluding title and all calculations • Graph • “Safety Test” results • Explanation on how egg survives the crash • Discussion • Answer to discussion questions with complete sentences

  14. “Recycled Car” Project Checklist • 3. Presentation • Evidence that each member works • Each member presents • Keeps eye contact with the audience • Does not read the report • Looks prepared to present • Car presentation • Has a name • Has at least 3 recycled parts presented • Looks presentable, attractive • Car operation • The team shows that the car works or runs properly • The car protects an egg during the front-crash test • The team discusses the answers to questions proposed for discussion.
