  2. Childhood Experiences • I grew up in a family of four. I am the oldest of two daughters. • Reading was always encouraged. • We made regular trips to the library for storytime. I adored the friendly librarian, Gwen. • Mom read us bedtime stories every night. • Our elderly babysitter, “Grandma” Hysler, told stories from memory. (I don’t remember this, but she once told me that when I was little, she tried to tell me the version of The Three Little Pigs she grew up with. But I would cry when the first two pigs got eaten, so she had to change the story so that they survived by running away at the last minute).

  3. Reading and school • The schools I went to had large, well organized libraries with a good selection of books. • First independent reading experience: Practicing reading ChickaChicka Boom Boom at home to read in front of my kindergarten class. • Favorite non-fiction topics: Animals; folktales.

  4. Favorite Picture Books • Dr. Seuss • Berenstain Bears • Eric Carl • The Magic School Bus • Mr. Men and Little Miss books. • The Talking Eggs by Robert D. San Souci • Clifford • Mother Goose • Various fairytales

  5. Favorite Chapter Books • American Girls series • Pee Wee Scouts series • Goosebumps • Real Scary Stories • Roald Dahl • Jennifer Murdley’s Toad and other Bruce Covillebooks • Shadow of the Fox by Ellen Steiber • Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn • Various mysteries and scary stories.

  6. When I got a little older… • Graduated from R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps to his Fear Street books • Howl’s Moving Castle by Dianna Wynne Jones • Redwall and other books by Brian Jacques • I Was a Teenage Fairy by Francesca Lia Block • The Woman in the Wall by Patrice Kindl • Various comic books and manga • Just about anything regarding mythology, the supernatural, or the paranormal.
