  1. An Elementary Reader Looking Back at My Early Reading Experiences By Michelle Simpson C & I 449, Summer 2012

  2. From an Early Age… I loved to look at books at a very early age. My mom read aloud to me often. My dad and I were the readers in our family, but my mom enjoyed reading to my brother and me.

  3. Some of My Early Books Looking Back at Early Reading Experiences My favorite book as a young child was called Peppermint. It was about a homeless cat who found an owner. These are other books that I enjoyed. My mom would often let me pick out a “Little Golden Book” after grocery shopping on Saturdays.

  4. In Primary Grades • I will always remember the first story I read in first grade, entitled Sun Up (a Dick & Jane type story). It went like this: • “The sun was up. Sandy was up. Bing was up.” • I was very excited to learn to read! Reading the Marvin K. Mooney book was probably one of my first experiences in reading with expression. I enjoyed reading my Bible and Bible stories, especially those with pictures. This is me on Christmas morning with my new Bible. My mom joined a book club that sent us a new book each month. Some Favorites: Any Dr. Seuss characters, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and books about animals.

  5. A Favorite Book Series When I was in second grade, my mom began reading to us from the Little House on the Prairie series. I couldn’t wait until we read them each night! I also began to watch the show, but I always preferred the books. During this time, I began to like books from long ago. Other books I enjoyed were Heidi and Little Women.

  6. Intermediate Grades In fourth grade, my teacher read us the book Beezus and Ramona. Beverly Cleary became one of my favorite authors and I read many of her other books. Judy Blume became another favorite author as I progressed through the intermediate grades. Ordering books through school book orders was something I enjoyed each month.

  7. Junior High Grades In junior high, I read and shared popular books with friends. We read Paula Danziger books and I began to enjoy mysteries.
