WHAT ARE THEY? • Chinchillas are rodents that are slightly larger than squirrels. • They are native to the Andes Mountains in South America. • Most closely related to the squirrels.
Different Species • There are two different types of Chinchillas • The Chinchilla brevicaudata • More closely related to a guinea pig. • The Chinchilla lanigera • More closely related to a mouse.
The Andes • Chinchillas natural habitat are the Andes mountains. • They live in burrows or crevices in rock formations. • They eat plants, fruit, and small insects.
History of the Chinchilla • Chinchilla means “little Chincha”, who were the native people of the Andes Mountains. • They wore the chinchillas soft and dense fur. • By the end of the 19th century, chinchillas had become extremely rare due to over hunting. • The earliest recording of chinchilla fur can be dated back as early as 1895.
Topic today • While it is currently illegal to hunt wild chinchillas. • Some are bred for the sole purpose of their fur on breeding farms. • It takes an average of 8 chinchillas to make 1 fur coat. • Chinchillas are also available as pets.
