Habitat • In their native habitat, chinchillas live in burrows or crevices in rocks. • They are agile jumpers and can jump up to 1.8m. • They live in colonies at high altitudes up to 4,270 m in the Andes of Bolivia, Chile, and Peru.
Diet • In the wild chinchillas have been observed eating plants fruits, seeds, and small insects. • This diet could irritate the digestive system of a domestic chinchilla whose diet should be primarily hay-based.
Why The wild chinchilla was nearly exterminated before protective laws were passed. At one time over 200,000 pelts were exported from Chile. Wild chinchillas soft gray pelts have been valued since the days of the Inca and have cost as much as $100,000 each! How Chinchillas are now raised on farms in South America and the United States, and this has resulted in lower prices for the skins, which are still considered among the most valuable. Most chinchillas currently used by the fur industry for clothing and other accessories are farm-raised. Conservation
