Simplot is registered with Washington One Call. Whenever any excavation work is completed adjacent to or near the biogas pipeline people must call 811at least 3 days prior to beginning the excavation.
Bringing Earth’s Resources To Life Possible Hazards • Possible hazards associated with unintended release from the biogas pipeline facility. Methane is odorless, colorless, and a tasteless gas. The gas may cause a flash fire. May cause convulsions. May affect the central nervous system. Reduces oxygen available for breathing
Bringing Earth’s Resources To Life Possible Hazards • Possible hazards associated with unintended release from the biogas pipeline facility. Hydrogen Sulfide is the rotten egg smell, extreme fire hazard, heavier than air, need to use analytical device for detection because it causes olfactory fatigue or paralysis of the sense of smell. Low concentrations cause irritation to mucous membranes, headache, dizziness or nausea. Higher concentrations (200-300 ppm) may result in respiratory arrest leading to coma, and exposure for more than 30 minutes at 700 ppm may be fatal.
Bringing Earth’s Resources To Life Physical Indications • A pipeline marker is damaged • Digging equipment adjacent to pipeline markers
Bringing Earth’s Resources To Life Steps To Protect Public Safety • Call 911 • Call J.R. Simplot 24-hour contact phone number • Isolate for ½ mile in all directions • Stay up wind of the excavated area • Walk away don’t drive away, potential ignition source • Keep away from all ignition sources
Bringing Earth’s Resources To Life Procedures for Reporting • Call 911 • Call J.R. Simplot • J.R. Simplot has detailed procedures for reporting pipeline failures.
