The regulars are out! • In 1775 British troops went to seize colonial arms and ammunition in Concord, Mass. • Paul Revere and William Dawes rode ahead to warn John Hancock and Sam Adams Paul Revere
Colonial minutemen (militia) and British regulars (army) clashed at Lexington and Concord. • British retreated to Boston. Old North Bridge in Concord The gunfire in Lexington was the start of the War for Independence. It is called the “shot heard around the world.” British Retreat to Boston
Bunker Hill Breed’s Hill • In June 1775, British and colonial forces clashed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. • The British won, but the Americans had proven to be tough. Misnomer: The Battle of Bunker Hill was actually fought on Breed’s Hill.
