15 Facebook Tips in 15 Minutes Nyleva Corley | Samantha Stiles Office of Public Affairs Social Media Collaborative FacebookBootcamp Feb. 16, 2011
1. Stake your claim. • Register a username for your Page. • You only need 25 fans. • Pick a name that’s easy to remember.
2. Be an admin like never before. • Navigate Facebook as your Page and interact with other Pages in a more official capacity.
3. Plan it out, and with others. • Create a conversation calendar. • Recruit multiple admins. • Use news pegs or trending topics.
4. Show off your content. • Engage your audience with clickable links, photos and videos. • Drive traffic back to your Web site.
5. Move beyond the Like button. • Ask a question. • Post a poll, quiz or contest. • Add an event.
6. What to say and how to say it. • Decide on a tone. • Keep it real.
7. Don’t write a novel. • Keep updates short and pithy. • Readers will skim over posts that are too wordy.
8. We’re not Justin Bieber. • Ten posts a day is too many, and once a month is too few. • We usually post once a day.
9. Be nice and give shout-outs. • Route traffic to your favorite pages with hyperlinks. • Compliment your colleagues or fans in posts.
10. You have options. • Expand or hide comments by default. • Disallow fan posts and pictures to your wall. • The new spam filter can help.
11. Protect your sandbox. • Write and post a moderation policy. • It’s OK to ask commenters to play by your rules.
12. Don’t fear negativity. • Engage with your readers and help steer the conversation.
13. Play favorites. • Use Likes to promote your favorite Pages. • We’ve listed 109 UT Pages. • Stay up-to-date with these Pages in your news feed.
14. Customize a tab or two. • Use custom “tabs” for special announcements or promotions.
15. You can judge a Page by its cover. • Engage your graphic designer for a knockout profile image. • Build identity consistency across your social media channels. • Stay tuned to the 11:15 a.m. session for more.
