  1. Bell Ringer (15 minutes) On the following slide, imagine what type of individuals wore these clothes. Picture their personalities, occupations, and social lives. Did they know each other? Were they friends, enemies, or just acquaintances? Write at least two paragraphs detailing their lives.

  4. Facts Born--- Charles John Huffam Dickens February 7, 1812 England Pen-name "Boz"

  5. Facts: • the most popular English Novelist of the Victorian Era and one of the most popular of all time. • Wrote Novels and Short Stories • Themes dealt with social reform

  6. Early Life • He liked to go outside and read • Had a photographic memory which helped him bring his fiction to life\ • Dickens’ family was moderately wealthy • He went to a private school

  7. But….. • However, Charles’ dad overspent– he was put in a debtors prison so Charles could not continue his education • The family split up and Charles stayed with a family friend and got to see his family on Sundays.

  8. 12 Years Old • Charles worked ten hour days at Warren’s Blacking Warehouse • He earned 6 schillings per week pasting labels on jars of thick shoe polish • This money paid for his lodgings with Mrs. Roylance and helped support his family. • His working conditions over the next few years would be inspiration to many of his stories

  9. First Story • In 1833, Dickens was able to get his very first story, A Dinner at Poplar Walk, published in the London periodical, Monthly Magazine.

  10. Ups and Downs • Charles Dickens had many stories that were published and denied

  11. Later • On 2 April 1836, he married Catherine Thomas Hogarth. • They had 10 kids. • Dickens’ traveled with his wife to America and Canada • He toured New York where he gave lectures and readings

  12. Works • A Christmas Carol was written -1843 • Major works, A Tale of Two Cities (1859); and Great Expectations (1861) soon

  13. Death • On June 8, 1870, Dickens suffered a stroke at his home. This was not the first one that occurred. • he was laid to rest in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey.
