  2. Structure and Function of the Cardiovascular System • Made up of the heart, blood, and miles of blood vessels • Closed system. • Moves oxygen and nutrients to cells • Removes carbon dioxide and wastes

  3. The Heart: The Beat Goes On! • Made of cardiac muscle that never stops moving • Located behind your sternum and between lungs • Keeps blood moving throughout your body

  5. Blood • Tissue consisting of cells, cell fragments, and liquid • Carries oxygen from the lungs to all body cells • Removes carbon dioxide and carries it to the lungs to be exhaled • Carries waste products to the kidneys to be dispelled

  7. Plasma Plasma makes up 75% of blood. It is made up mostly of water. Go back!

  8. Red Blood Cells Red blood cells are very important. Their job is to carry oxygen throughout the body and to pick up and get rid of carbon dioxide. Go back!

  9. White Blood Cells White blood cells help the body fight disease. Go back!

  10. Platelets Platelets are irregular shaped cells. They help blood clot when a person gets injured. Go back!

  11. 3 Types of Blood Vessels • Arteries: Move oxygen rich blood away from the heart • Veins: Move non-oxygenated blood back to the heart • Capillaries: Microscopic blood vessels that connect arteries and veins

  12. Mapping the Path • The blue lines show blood rich with oxygen flowing away from the heart. • The red lines show blood that is going back to the lungs to pick up more oxygen.
