The Cardiovascular System By Susie Student
Structure and Function of the Cardiovascular System • Made up of the heart, blood, and miles of blood vessels • Closed system. • Moves oxygen and nutrients to cells • Removes carbon dioxide and wastes
The Heart: The Beat Goes On! • Made of cardiac muscle that never stops moving • Located behind your sternum and between lungs • Keeps blood moving throughout your body
Blood • Tissue consisting of cells, cell fragments, and liquid • Carries oxygen from the lungs to all body cells • Removes carbon dioxide and carries it to the lungs to be exhaled • Carries waste products to the kidneys to be dispelled
What’s in Blood • Blood is composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Plasma Red Blood Cells White Blood Cells Platelets Next
Plasma Plasma makes up 75% of blood. It is made up mostly of water. Go back!
Red Blood Cells Red blood cells are very important. Their job is to carry oxygen throughout the body and to pick up and get rid of carbon dioxide. Go back!
White Blood Cells White blood cells help the body fight disease. Go back!
Platelets Platelets are irregular shaped cells. They help blood clot when a person gets injured. Go back!
3 Types of Blood Vessels • Arteries: Move oxygen rich blood away from the heart • Veins: Move non-oxygenated blood back to the heart • Capillaries: Microscopic blood vessels that connect arteries and veins
Mapping the Path • The blue lines show blood rich with oxygen flowing away from the heart. • The red lines show blood that is going back to the lungs to pick up more oxygen.
What do you know? • What is the purpose of the cardiovascular system? • Why do you need blood circulating through your body? • When does the heart rest? • Why are capillaries so tiny?
