  2. Signs and symptoms • Skin rash • Pain • blisters • Headaches • Sore throat • Appetite loss

  3. Is there another name for chickenpox? • Yes, its called varicella

  4. Is chickenpox viral or bacterial? • It is viral

  5. How to treat it • Doctors will prescribe antibiotics to treat the sores that become infected by the bacteria. The treatment also includes resting and soaking in oatmeal baths to help the itching

  6. The incubation period • It usually takes 14 to 16 day for the spot to go through all its stages. It includes blistering, bursting, drying, and crusting over. New red spots will appear every day for up to 5 to 7 days. • It usually takes about 10 days after the first symptoms before all blisters have crusted over. This is when the person with chickenpox can return to day care, school, or work.

  7. How it can be prevented • The best way is to get the chickenpox vaccine. Should have 2 doses of the vaccine.

  8. Is chickenpox contagious? • Yes, it is highly contagious and spreads by contact with someone that has it.

  9. Is there a vaccine for chickenpox? • Yes, varicella vaccine. For children they need 2 doses. The first shot should be at the age of 12-18 months. Second at 4-6 years. For older children should have two shots 4 to 8 weeks between the first and second shot.

Other facts about chickenpox (varicella) • Caused by the varicella zoster virus • Chickenpox is usually mild but may severe for infants • More than 6 billion doses of varicella vaccine have been given since march of 1995. • In ages 5-9 one usually gets the disease in the late winter and early spring.
