Annotated bibliography. What is a bibliography?. A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, websites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "references" or "works cited" depending on the style format you are using.

  1. Annotated bibliography

What is a bibliography? • A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, websites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. • Bibliographies are sometimes called "references" or "works cited" depending on the style format you are using. • A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).

  3. What is annotation? • An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. • Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources.

  4. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following:

  5. summarize • Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main • arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If • someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your • annotations will determine how detailed your summary is.

  6. assess • After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. • Is it a useful source? • How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? • Is the information reliable? • Is this source biased or objective? • What is the goal of this source?

  7. reflect • Once you've summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. • Was this source helpful to you? • How does it help you shape your argument? • How can you use this source in your research project? • Has it changed how you think about your topic?

  8. What will it look like? • Full reference citation • brief paragraph about each source to include: • 2-4 sentences to summarize the main ideas • 1-2 sentences to relate the article to your research topic

  10. You need AT LEAST 8 sources! • That means: • 8 articles, websites, or books • 8 citations • 8 paragraphs

  11. Rules to follow; • Basic APA Style Format for an Annotated Bibliography • 1. Use double spacing throughout the bibliography. • 2. Write a standard reference entry. • 3. If the standard entry is more than one line, use a hanging indentation: The first line should start at the left margin, and subsequent lines should be indented four spaces. The right margin is the right margin of your document. • 4. Go down to the next line, indent two more spaces, and write the annotation. • 5. The annotation can consist of (a) a short summary of the work referenced and (b) a short description of how the work relates to your research
