Preparing Your Home • Before an Earthquake: • Secure furniture to walls and floor • Place large or heavy objects on lower floors • Store valuable or easily breakable items in latched cabinets • Keep house in good condition • Store weed killers, pesticides, and flammable product securely in closed cabinets • Locate safe spots every room under a STURDY table or against an inside wall • Hold earthquake drills with your family

  4. During an earthquake First Thing… DROP, COVER, and HOLD

  5. If indoors • Drop to ground • take Cover under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture • Hold On until shaking has stopped • If there is no table nearby crouch with your arms/hands covering your head/neck • Stay away from glass,windows, outside doors, and walls • If you are in bed STAY, covering your head with a pillow, unless you are underneath a heavy light structure • Do NOT use doorway, unless you know it is strongly supported • Do NOT use elevators • Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside

  6. If outdoors • If outdoors: • Stay there • Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires • Once in open, stay there until shaking stops

  7. If in a moving vehicle • Stop as quickly as is safely possible • Stay in vehicle • Proceed cautiously once earthquake has stopped • Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that may have been damaged during quake

  8. If trapped under debris • Do not light match • Do not move about or kick up dust • Cover mouth with handkerchief or clothing • Tap on pipe, or use whistle to get rescuer attention • Do NOT yell or shout • Know SOS- • S- … • O- _ _ _ • S- …

Directly Following • Look around to make sure it is safe to move • Expect aftershocks • Help injured or trapped persons • Look for and extinguish small fires. • smaller than a personal trash bin • Listen to battery-operated radio or television for latest emergency information • Be aware of possible tsunamis if you live in coastal areas

  11. Sheltering • Go to designated shelter if your home is compromised • Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362(4FEMA)

Around the house • Stay away from damaged areas • Unless your assistance has been specifically requested by police, fire, or relief organizations. • Put on long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, sturdy shoes and work gloves to protect against injury • Clean-up spilled medicines, bleaches, gasoline or other flammable liquids

When outside • Leave area if  you smell gas or fumes from other chemicals • Check for gas leaks • Do not turn off gas unless absolutely necessary • Check sewage and water lines for damage: • If you suspect damage to sewage lines • avoid using toilets • If you suspect damage to water lines: • avoid using water from tap • obtain safe water by melting ice cubes

  14. Electrical System • Check for electrical system damage such as • sparks, broken, frayed wires • hot insulation

  15. Sewage System • Check sewage and water lines for damage: • If you suspect damage to sewage lines • avoid using toilets • If you suspect damage to water lines: • avoid using water from tap • obtain safe water by melting ice cubes
