Lesson Design Structures/Models of Instruction • Madeline Hunter’s 7 steps • UbD (Understanding by Design) • The 5E Model • Project Based Learning
Madeline Hunter Design • Select Learning Objectives – Difficulty/complexity based on knowledge of students • Anticipatory Set – Getting students interested in the new material • Objective-State the objective • Instruction-Presenting, modeling • Checking Understanding-Determine whether students are making sense of the information • Guided Practice-Immediately after instruction, students are given the opportunity to apply or practice • Independent Practice-This may occur in class or during homework
UbD Highlights • Desired Results – Enduring understandings, big ideas and concepts-not facts • Assessment Evidence – Observable, measurable, performance tasks • Learning Plan– What will students do? What will teachers do?
5E Design • Engage – Engaging activity to connect past and future learning • Explore – Students explore environment and/or manipulate materials • Explain – Students explain explored concepts • Elaborate – Extends understanding through practice skills • Evaluate - Learners assess their understanding of concepts and skill development
Project Based Learning (PBL) • Identify content – TEKS and skills to be covered • Determine how content is taught – direct teach or learned through discovery • Create Driving Question – authentic, relevant, local • 21st Century Skills - identify emphasized skills • Determine performance objectives—what students • should know and be able to do as a result • Create Entry Event – engaging, creates need to know • Manage the process—include differentiation strategies, rubrics, team contracts • Authentic assessment and reflection – presentation to professional audience

Next Steps Find your bus! • Check for your bus number and team number on your pack On the bus: • Sit with your team – share cell numbers • Establish check in times with your facilitator • Study the map & choose a starting point • Brainstorm a TEKS based focus for your shared lesson
When You Arrive • Come downstairs and wait to receive your armband • Explore • Work together to find common themes in your content areas • Create a dynamic lesson • Upload it to eBackpack • Complete reflection questions • Be ready to share
Critical Times 9:30 Buses pull out 2:40 Meet your group to walk to the bus & complete debrief questions 2:50 Buses leave the Perot 4:00 You are released from campus Lessons must be uploaded to eBackpack before you arrive back at campus We are seeking 1 shared lesson per team Your facilitator will be checking in with you at lunch time.
