Case Study #4 – Playgrounds and Performance: Results Management at KaBoom! Harry Chapman Principal Bay Area Consulting Group LLC Hchapman@baconsulting.net (415) 971-5746 9a
The Situation: • KaBOOm! – a “not-for-profit” that built playgrounds in “kid-rich, playground-poor” neighborhoods. • Board Challenge: • “Getting too much information and didn’t know what to pay attention to” • “We wanted to be able to determine in what ways KaBOOM! Was most successful and healthy.” • “People will do what you measure; be careful what you measure because it’s going to drive people’s behavior” • “I want our measures to be internally driven, not funder dirven. I want a measurement system htat is supported by the organizational culture so that the board, myself and our staff ‘own’ the data from the outset.”
Theory of Action • Three Interconnected strategies: • Through its Lead strategy, KaBOOM! will continue to lead communities to create new playspaces through its signature community-build process. • The Seed strategy creates playspaces at a much faster pace by enabling community groups themselves to build playspaces with the help of planning tools, training, challenge grants, and technical assistance. • The Rally strategy will rally individual advocates for play through city-level activities that produce more places to play in towns nationwide.
