Geography • Greece is a country in Europe • Greece is near the Mediterranean Sea • The main part of Greece is surrounded by water • The rest of Greece is made up of islands
Greek City-States • Because Greece has many islands and tall mountains, the Greeks began to build city-states instead of one country • A city-state is a city with its own laws, rulers, and money • City-states were cities that acted like countries • Two of the most famous city-states were Athens and Sparta
Sparta • Sparta was very powerful and had its own army • Sparta defeated other city-states to gain wealth and power • Sparta was known for its warriors, training to be a good soldier was very important
Athens • The people of Athens wanted to rule themselves and not have a king or queen • We have a democracy in the United States because of the ideas started in Athens • Athens felt that learning and knowledge were very important • The people of Athens built many beautiful monuments and temples
Greek Art • The Greeks created many lasting and important works of art • The Romans were so impressed by Greek culture and art that they copied it and spread it throughout the world
Greek Gods • The Greeks believed that there were many gods, and the most important lived on Mount Olympus where they each had things they were in charge of • Most of these gods were copied again by the Romans, but with changed names • You’ve probably heard of most of these by their Roman names, because we named the planets after them!
Greek Myths • The ancient Greeks believed in many fantastic (and not real) creatures, and had many myths and stories about them • Lots of these creatures have been in stories, movies, and art since them – you may recognize a few!
Olympics • The Greeks believed that healthy and strong bodies were important • The Olympic games were held every 4 years • Events were mostly races, jumping, and throwing • The winners were given olive leaf crowns
