FUTURE THRUST • Productivity of pulses has stagnated over a long period at 500-600 kgs./ha. in rainfed areas. • There is a need to increase the productivity to 1000kgs /ha. in rainfed areas and 2000 kgs/ha. under protective irrigation for achieving self sufficiency in pulse production.
Intercropping in pulses during Kharif season • The most common goal of intercropping is to produce a greater yield on a given piece of land by making use of the resources that would otherwise not be utilized by a single crop. • Advantages of intercropping • Gives higher income than sole crop per unit area • Acts as an insurance against failure of crops in abnormal year • Intercrops maintain soil fertility as the nutrient uptake is made from both layers • Reduces soil runoff and helps in weed control • Judicious use of resources such as land, labour, inputs etc • Intercrops provide shade and support to the main crop • Reduces the incidence of pest and diseases • Encourages biodiversity by providing a habitat for a variety of insects and soil organisms that would not be present in a single crop environment.
