Steps to Work Award: Personal Development and Employability Skills

This award is designed to help learners develop key personal and practical skills for the workplace. The program includes units on personal development, employability, and practical contexts, such as childcare. Learners will explore their skills, interests, and responsibilities related to employment. They will also gain practical experience through work placements to enhance their employability.   1. Steps to Work (SCQF 3,4) This Award is made up of two sections: • Person Centred • Practical Context Learners must choose the 1 SQA Credit from each Section.

  2. The Personal Centred section includes the following Personal Development Units: Practical Abilities (1 Credit) Self & Work (1 Credit) Self Awareness (1 Credit) Self in Society (1 Credit) These are all 40 hour Units

  3. And the following Employability Units: Preparing for Employment: First Steps (0.25) Building Own Employability Skills (0.5 ) Responsibilities of Employment (0.25) Dealing with Work Situations (0.25) These are 10 hour and 20 hour Units.

Preparing for Employment : First Steps Learners will think about their past and present experiences to identify skills, knowledge, interests etc. Based on their review, learners will draw conclusions about how their skills, qualities and interests can help them to enter the world of work Learners will think about what they want from a job, what types of job fit with what they want and what they will need to be able offer to get and keep a job.

Building Your Employability Skills Learners will use a range of sources to find out about jobs available They will think about which jobs would suit them in relation to their skills, knowledge etc and which employers may have suitable jobs. Learners will practise skills such as contacting an employer, completing an application form, preparing a CV, taking part in an interview

  8. Responsibilities of Employment Learners will identify their responsibilities as employees. They will also identify how they should be treated by an employer when they are in the workplace Learners will draw conclusions about the differences between how they should behave in the workplace and other places they know of Learners will identify types of behaviour which are unacceptable in the work place. They will also draw conclusions about possible consequences of such behaviour.

  9. Dealing with Work Situations Learners will think about the different types of people they could be working with. They will think about how to behave towards other people at work and how other people should behave towards them Learners will learn how to discuss a work related task with a colleague. They will learn how to deal with conflict and they will draw conclusions about the consequences of not dealing with situations at work in an acceptable way

  10. The Practical Contexts include: • Sport and Outdoor Activity • Arts and Media • ICT • Community Development • Childcare • Work-based Skills • And more! Within these contexts there is a wide range of Units to choose from.

Using Units from the Practical Context Or any two of the following 0.5 credit Units • Children’s Development and Learning: An Introduction • Children’s Development and Learning: Babies (0-1 year) • Children’s Development and Learning: Pre-School (3-5 years) • Children’s Development and Learning: The Toddler Years (1-3 years)
