HYDROPOWER What Is It? By Sam P. & Isabella
Definition & History • Hydroelectric power • Used to make electricity by using a renewable energy source. • In 200 B.C., the water wheel was invented. • In the 1800’s, Greeks used water wheels to grind wheat. • World’s 1sthydropower plant is in Appleton, Wisconsin. • 1st hydropower plant that opened in the WEST is in San Bernardino, California. • The Americans & Europeans used water wheels to power their machines. • (Hydropower plants include the Hoover Dam.)
Location • There are over 1,100 hydropower plants across the U.S. • 241 plants are in California • 72 plants in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, & Arizona combined. • 87 plants in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, & Georgia combined. • 157 plants in Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, & Louisiana combined. • 800+ plants in all other states! • Hydropower plants appear all over the U.S.
Accessibility • Indiana has 7 hydropower plants • Twin Branch • Elkhart • Norway • Oakdale • Greenfield • Markland • South Bend
Viability • Indiana may not be surrounded by water , but we have 7 hydropower plants . • Good choice to use hydropower because water is a renewable energy source • Not a good choice because it is hard to get if you don’t live near water • Only 3% of America uses hydropower
Advantages/Disadvantages • ADVANTAGES • Hydropower is renewable • Huge amounts of power • Doesn’t pollute • Lasts for long amounts of time • The energy is stored when the water is stored • Can be used when needed • ___________________________________________________________________________ • DISADVANTAGES • Takes decades to build and profit off of a hydropower plant • Extremely expensive to build • People lose homes because of dams/flooding • Building dams can kill the people who are working on it • Dams can block the process of a river • If water comes rushing out of dam, generator could go too fast and break
Fun-Powered Facts! • Hydropower’s advantage over other sources is that rainfall is highly predictable. • Hydropower provides over 20% of electricity for humans in the world. • Fast flowing water is an “ingredient” of hydroelectricity. • The west side of the U.S. is commonly powered by hydroelectricity. • The least expensive energy source in U.S. is hydropower. • Hydropower can be a help of water supply and flood control. • Water/hydropower is commonly used as a renewable energy source.
