  2. Four Basic Needs • Living things must satisfy their basic needs for energy, water, living space, and stable internal conditions.

  3. ENERGY • Food is an organism’s energy source • Autotroph/producer = make their own food • Auto = self troph = feeder • Heterotrophs/consumers = cannot make their own food. • Hetero = other

  4. WATER • Must have H2O to survive • Dissolves more chemicals than any other substance on Earth • 92% of blood is water • Organisms will survive only a few days without H2O

  5. LIVING SPACE • All organisms need a place to live, obtain food and H2O, and find shelter • Space on Earth is limited so organisms must compete

  6. STABLE INTERNAL CONDITIONS • Organisms must keep conditions inside their body stable despite environmental changes
