General Information • Its Name is Plutonium . • Its Atomic Symbol is Pu . • Its Atomic Number is 94 . • It has an Atomic Mass of 242.05 u • It is a metal .
History • In 1934 Enrico Fermi and a group of scientists reported the discovery of the 94th Element , which he named hesperium and included it in his 1938 Nobel Lecture . However , the sample he had in possession was a mixture of krypton , barium and other elements . Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, Edwin M. McMillan, J. W. Kennedy, and A. C. Wahl produced and isolated plutonium(238) and chemically identified it as Element 94 . In the University of California .
Appearance Plutonium is silvery white. It is also shiny .
Use #1 Plutonium was used in Word War 2 in the Atomic Bombs because of its easiness fission which helps in splitting of the Atoms that causes the explosion .
Use#2 Because it emits a lot of thermal energy in low ray situations . Plutonium was used to power the Twin Voyagers in 1977 which are still running today .
Use#3 Some variants of Plutonium that do not possess the ability to power nuclear reactors are used as nuclear fuel to power nuclear plants .
