Plutonium By Layne Bennett
Information • Plutonium • Atomic symbol is Pu • Atomic number is 94 • It is in the actinide group and its periodic number is 7
Electrons • Plutonium has 94 electrons on 7 rings, ending with two electrons on the last ring
Physical Propeties • Plutonium has a bright silvery appearance until it oxidizes which turns it into a dull gray. • Unlike most metals, it does not conduct heat or electricity very well. • It has a melting point of 640 °C and a boiling point of 3,228 °C.
Chemical Properties • Plutonium put off energy in alpha decay, and if there is a big enough piece of plutonium the energy will be enough to make it warm to the touch. • It is usually created in nuclear reactors from natural uranium.
Other Fun Facts • Plutonium-239 was used in the atomic bomb Fat Man which was detonated over Nagasaki, causing mass destruction, and a death count of around 39,000. • 13.6 pounds of plutonium were used in Fat Man, about the size of a softball. • To make it explode the process of fission was used inside of the bomb.
