ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTIVENESSUSE OF NEEM LEAF MEAL ON DISEASE AND PARASITE CONTROL IN LOCAL CHICKEN PRODUCTION IN NYUNGWE EPA- KARONGA DISTRICT IN MALAWI BY KNIGHT CHAMBALIKA MHANGO
PRESENTATION OUTLINE • Introduction • Project goal and objectives • Methodology • Activities • Conclusion
INTRODUCTION • Poultry production make an important contribution to poverty alleviation in Malawi. • Rural poultry production is characterised by free – range, scavenging production systems, low inputs in terms of feed supplements, disease and parasites infestation, and hence subsequent low production and high mortality rate. • Assa, 2012 identified prevalence of disease as one of the major challenges affecting poultry production in Malawi. However, it is difficult to access veterinary services especially in rural areas and they are very expensive. • Beg, Rubel, Aftabazzaman, Nahid, & Begum, 2018 investigated that there are beneficial effects of supplementing neem leaf meal as an alternative antibiotics on broiler chicken ration for higher profitability. • Neem is one the trees that are locally found in most parts of Karonga and Farmers Field Schools are currently conducting several studies to assess its effectiveness on pest control in a variety of crops. • It is against this background that this project would like to promote use of neem leaf meal on local poultry production to control disease and parasites.
PROJECT GOAL AND OBJECTIVES • The main goal of the project is to promote use of neem leaf meal on disease and parasite in local chicken production in Nyungwe Extension Planning Area(EPA)- Karonga district in Malawi. PROJECT OBJECTIVES • To increase farmers knowledge and skills on use of neem leaf meal on poultry production through capacity building. • To increase poultry production by reducing disease and parasites infestation through use of neem leaf meal. • To increase farmers income through poultry production.
METHODOLOGY • The project will work with 30 Farmer Field Schools in Karonga under KULIMA project that is being implemented by Self Help Africa. Farmer Field School is a group of farmers that learn through conducting field research on different farming technologies. • Each group has an average membership of 30 and 1 Community Based Facilitator per each group • This project will give an opportunity to farmers to conduct studies on the effectiveness of neem leaf meal on local chickens on disease and parasite control. • This project will be implemented in collaboration with Self Help Africa and government extension officer(Master Trainer) responsible for Nyungwe EPA. • Participant will be trained on preparation of neem leaf meal: • Plucking neem leaves • Drying the leaves • Crushing by pounding • Sieving • Mixing neem leaf meal with chicken feeds at a rate of 2.5 grams per kilogram • Feeding the chickens everyday
CONCLUSION • This project will provide a low cost solution to disease and parasite control that have been identified as some of the major challenges affecting the poultry industry in Malawi through use neem leaf meal. • Farmers knowledge and skills on poultry production will increase through capacity building and awareness meetings that will be through this project and therefore poultry production will also increase.
