The Rocky Mountains are not part of the Great Plains region. • Finding fossils of seacreatures have lead Geologists to believe that Nebraska was once covered by an ocean. • The IceAge was when the Earth was covered by glaciers.
Plants, soil, and water are examples of renewable resources. • Swimming, hydroelectricity, and irrigation are examples of water. • Blizzards, hot summers, and four seasons make up Nebraska’s weather.
Atlatl, farming, and hunting are examples of techniques and tools used by Ancient Native Americans. • Look at the different Nebraska crops and know different ways the crop is used. Soybeans – are used for soymilk, fuel, ink, paint, food, Wheat – bread, straw for bedding, cereal Corn – eat, ethanol, sweetener, sauces, and soups Grasses – feed barn yard animals, pellets
The Till Plains is made up of dark, rich soil. There is sand, gravel, and small rocks found in the soil. Much of Nebraska’s corn and soybeans are grown in this region. Some people grow fruit in this region. The state’s two largest cities; Lincoln and Omaha are found in this region. The Missouri River flows through this region and makes the eastern boarder of our state.
The Great Plains makes up the majority of our state. The land is flat and wide along the Platte River Valley and it is hilly as you move out to the West. The Great Plains is good for producing wheat, oats, and cereal grains. Animals are very important to this region. Farmers grow hay to feed the animals on the farms and ranches. Cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens, and turkeys are raised for meat. Nebraska’s beef and pork are world famous.
Ashfall Fossil Beds were created by an ancient volcano erupted and created a cloud of ash. The ash blew over a water hole and killed hundreds of animals that were drinking there.
Farming was important to ancient Native Americans because it allowed them to stay in one place for a long time. It also allowed them to have food all year long, and they didn’t have to travel to get it.
