  3. The problem … Due to the heavily developed tourist sector in this region forest fires are a major problem in the local economic growth. They are difficult to handle and more difficult to predict. The concept .. To design and implement an innovative ICT system that will allow the Ionian Islands Regional Fire Service to better manage the risk of Forest Fires. Parts of the FFRMIS • 20 Fire Tenders of miscellaneous types have been equipped with a rugged tablet PC, GPS tracking and GPRS/WiFi Communication with 10 of the above having attached meteorological equipment to provide real-time weather data to the FFRMIS • 6 Automatic Weather Stations around Corfu island transmit wirelessly real-time data to the FFRMIS • 2 server in cluster run the application of the FFRMIS and serve it over the web • A wireless network GPRS / WiFi to support all communications ICT and Civil Protection Senigallia, 18-19 June 2007

Main features of the FFRMIS Monitor the fleet of firefighting vehicles in real time, using a wireless GPRS network Receive meteorological measurements, in real time, from stationary and mobile weather stations Estimate the risk of a new fire breaking out, anywhere in the region of concern, in real time Help both fire fighters and their coordinators to perform better and more precise in their task ICT and Civil Protection Senigallia, 18-19 June 2007

  7. Navigation The system provide both 2D & 3D navigation over Corfu Island. The information received is easily selected. ICT and Civil Protection Senigallia, 18-19 June 2007

  8. Fire Management The system displays the current front of the fire and of its estimated progress, in combination with the location of the firefighting vehicles, in real time. ICT and Civil Protection Senigallia, 18-19 June 2007

  9. Charting of risk zones The system provides a fire outbreak risk estimation through out the island and displays it on the map. ICT and Civil Protection Senigallia, 18-19 June 2007

  10. Vehicle Management The system provides the current location of any vehicle (moving or not) and if possible displays of collected weather data ICT and Civil Protection Senigallia, 18-19 June 2007

Project Implementation Information • Budget: 740.000 Euro’s • Project Duration: 4 months • System gone On-line: May 20, 2007 • Project implementation parties: • Region of the Ionian Islands, Administrative Authority - Regional Business Program of the Ionian Islands (funding) • Ionian Islands Regional Fire Service (final owner and user) • Research Academic Computer Technology Institute RACTI (designer of the project, scientific and technical supervision to the implementation) • Companies Association of Talent Information Systems S.A. and EMPHASIS Telematics (implementing the system) ICT and Civil Protection Senigallia, 18-19 June 2007
