T4L Rollout • There as still been no announcement for T4L for the majority of schools (except P5/P6) for 2010. • But we do know some things: • Numbers will be similar to 2009 for all schools • Windows PCs will rollout with Windows 7 Enterprise • For Desktops and Laptops, Win 7 64-bit is expected • Adobe CS5 confirmed, MS Office 2010 expected • New brands/models of laptop computers on offer • DER Netbooks to be available on T4L this year • No longer based on Rollout Units, but Cash Value

T4L – Cash? • Since T4L and (CISP) started, allocations have been based on “points” or “units” • 1 unit = 1 Windows Desktop PC • Schools were allocated units based on their enrolment divided by 8 and split across 4 years • Laptops, Apple Macs and Servers cost multiple/fractions of units • Now, units will be provided as a Cash Value • Cash can be applied ONLY to T4L products

Engraving Computers • Previously it was expected that all PCs were to be engraved with the school’s name – but changes are occurring: • Lenovo and Acer have both stated that laptop warranty repairs will involve a direct swapout • Schools may receive new or refurbished laptops as replacements under warranty • Future desktop warranty claims may be by swapout, but at present are onsite repairs • All new computers should NOT be engraved

Personal Laptops and Storage • Regarding Personal Laptops at school, Sydney Region IT Services recommends: • Staff laptops can connect to the Internet, but ONLY if clean and they have up to date Antivirus software • Staff laptops should NOT be joined to the domain • Student personal laptops should NOT be used on the school network AT ALL • Personal Storage Devices (USB sticks & HDDs): • OK, but Group Policy DISABLING Autorun should be applied • Recommend that a FOLDER called Autorun.inf is placed on the ROOT folder of all external drive devices

Windows 7 in DET • T4L and Discretionary PC Desktops and Laptops are expected to come with Win 7 • Probably 64-bit OS for all but Netbooks • Possibly with Office 2010 (to be confirmed) • This will have implications for current software used in schools • Some older software may not work • Will be discussed further in Mark’s session later in the day (K-6 Days)

  17. Supporting Infrastructure • CPC Servers currently support: • SAV 10 - Will not work with Win 7 • Altiris • Windows Updates for Win XP • CPCs are now out of warranty • Need to be replaced with infrastructure to support Win 7 • DIP Lite to be installed for 1,700 Primary Schools

(Proposed – Subject to change) • T4L SOE Image • Currently being developed by DMIG • Replacement of Symantec Antivirus with MS Forefront Endpoint (all PC’s + Servers) • Install DIP Lite Servers in non-DER schools • Replacement of current Altiris Infrastructure with Microsoft SCCM (All PC’s) • Win 7 SOE made available for retro PC installation on in-warranty PCs

Smart Notebook V10 for Mac • There is a known error being reported by Smart Notebook V10 relating to Adobe Flash • If your Mac has Flash 10.1 installed, SMART Notebook is not happy and raises an error • Downgrading to Flash 10.0 resolves the issue • SMART have acknowledged the problem and will release a fix in Oct/Nov 2010 • SR can deploy a downgrade to fix the issue but websites that need 10.1 will not work • Log a call only for IWB computers, specifying the COMPUTER NAME(s) to be updated and leave them ON.

  26. IWBs in NSW Public Schools As at June 30 2010, there are: 12,125 classrooms with IWB/Projector installed 6,512 of these are discretionary purchases 1,772 are Connected Classrooms 3,841 are BER installations Approximate breakdown: 80% SMARTboard / 17% Panaboard / 3% Other

Sanyo Projector Lamps Schools have invested in multiple Sanyo Projectors and IWBs in the past two years Most projectors are used all day everyday The lamps are consumable items Each cost $257.40 ex GST and these costs will need to be factored into school budgets Always keep spare lamps on hand! NOTE: type A or B! “Dead” projectors may actually be dead lamps Swap the lamp before logging a warranty call Swap it back if it doesn’t fix it! Dead lamps MUST NOT end up in landfill as they contain mercury!

Sanyo Projector Maintenance With so many projectors now in classrooms, it is very important to maintain them properly Please ensure staff are familiar with the maintenance guides for: Cleaning the air filter Set the projector to auto-shutdown and not standby Resetting the thermal switch Replacing a dead or dying lamp All of these guides and more can be found at the DET Intranet site: http://tinyurl.com/detsanyo

Phase 6 Connected Classrooms • Phase 6 – Semester 2 2010 • All remaining schools (except BER-affected sites) will be receiving their Connected Classroom Installations in Phase 6. • Phase 6 schools have all had their on-site assessment completed with work scheduled • Contact us for Advice if required.

BER - Classroom Entitlements • All BER new and refurbished classrooms are entitled to receive the following: • IWB and Projector kit installed (school chooses brand) • 8 dual data outlets incl. two single outlets on the ceiling for possible future wireless access points • If you are concerned that your school has not received all data outlets, contact Paul Clark.

  35. Yammer – Have YOU joined yet? • Yammer is a real-time communication platform for companies, groups and organisations • NSW DET started using Yammer in 2008, but have recently opened it up to all DET Staff

Behind the News on Apple Macs • There is a known issue with accessing Behind the News video content from the ABC website on Apple Macs within DET • It was thought the issue related to Firefox, but in fact it is a problem with the ABC website itself • DET is currently working with both the ABC and Adobe in finding a solution • Rob Pucillo will advise Mac schools when the problem has been resolved.
