Department of Community HealthBureau of Health SystemsRadiation Safety Section Bruce Matkovich, Section Manager
Our Mission Reduce unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation from x-ray machines and other radiation machines We do not regulate MRI, lasers, ultrasound, or indoor tanning Radioactive materials are regulated by U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
What We Do • Register x-ray machines • Inspect x-ray and mammography facilities • Review radiation shielding plans
Registration of X-Ray Machines • X-ray machines must be registered with program to legally operate • We know who and where machines are • Program costs paid by radiation machine users • Mammography machines are given authorization to operate
A registration certificate must be posted in the x-ray facility
Radiation Shielding Reviews • Assure that the general public and radiation workers are protected • Review of shielding plans prior to construction can save costly modifications if inadequate shielding is installed
Inspection of X-Ray Facilities • Shielding of x-ray room • Performance of x-ray machine • Imaging system • Patient exposures • Exposure history of x-ray operators • Inspections once every 5 years
Inspection of Mammography Facilities • Qualifications of interpreting physician, x-ray technologist, and medical physicist • Patient dose • Image quality • Quality assurance program • Annual inspections
Radiation Safety Data • 10,000 facilities statewide having over 28,000 x-ray machines • About 330 mammography facilities
