  1. PIGDA Lightning Talks 3-18-09 Shawn Patton

  2. Quick Review • Called Sasuke in Japan • Man vs. Obstacle Competition • Occurs Twice a Year • 100 people compete each time • Against a 4 Stage Obstacle Course • In 21 competitions… only 2 have ever completed all 4 stages!

  3. Why?! • Ninja Warrior is totally sweet! • Japan is very far away • I need to be able to train in the comfort of my own backyard!

  4. Planning • Where should I make it? • What should I make it out of? • Which obstacles to make? • How do I convince my wife this is a good idea??

  5. Planning 1 - Where • My backyard of course!

  6. Planning 2 – Materials • Wood • Metal • Rope • Etc…

  7. Planning 3 – What

  8. Planning 3 – What • Clearly I can’t pick them all!! • Well, if you build the hardest obstacles, and train on them… then you can do the whole course. Right? Still too hard to build…

  9. Planning 3 – What Curtain Cling Makoto Nagano

  10. Planning 3 – What Cliffhanger Makoto Nagano

  11. Planning 4 – Wife • How do you convince your wife that building a Ninja Warrior Course is a good idea? One word. • Pergola!

  12. Building • Buy a bunch of stuff! • Recruit Helpers • Rent an auger, dig some holes • Hammer, saw, drill, how hard could it be??

  13. Building 1 – Recruiting • It helps if you have really good friends.

  14. Building 2 – Digging • Augers are awesome! But the ground can be… problematic.

  15. Building 3 – Whew…

  16. Building - Tips • It will take twice as long as you think • Really, put 1/3 of the post under ground and have the hole be 3 times the diameter of the post. • Mix the concrete before putting it in the hole, even if the bag says otherwise… • If you are going to be augering till 3 in the morning, make sure your neighbors are cool with that (mine were, they even watched )

  17. More Building Over engineer everything… huge bolts, multiple supports… Adults will be playing… err… training on this, so make it strong!

  18. Ta da! (Liz sewed the curtain, Thank you so much!!)

  19. Ta da!

  20. Start Training! In the snow…

  21. More Training! In fancy dress attire… Kudos to you Phil, the first (and so far only) one to ever complete the Cliffhanger…

  22. Future Steps • I added aspects of the Devil Steps and Bridge of Destiny to center. • Plans to add the Salmon Ladder (hardest obstacle from Stage 2) • Plans to add the Jumping Spider (hardest obstacle from Stage 1) • Add the other two posts so it actually looks like a Pergola (and so I can add a pipe slider).
