He also says that oftentimes the consequences or outcomes of the leader’s behaviors are judged rather than the actual behaviors themselves.

Whippo Talks about the Superior’s Ratings Measure Dr. Whippo states that the most commonly used measure of successful and unsuccessful leadership is the superior’s ratings measure. According to him, some of the disadvantages of utilizing this measure include superiors’ biases, raters may not be aware of true performance and the fact that raters may be unwilling to provide tough feedback. He feels that when utilizing subordinate’s ratings to measure successful and unsuccessful leadership, there are advantages in that the ratings are subject to the leaders’ behaviors and multiple raters are used so scores are averaged out to a mean performance rating. Furthermore, he indicates that the disadvantages of using subordinates’ ratings include the fact that some subordinates may simply not be motivated, there may be inherent biases with some subordinates that don’t accurately reflect the leader’s behaviors, and there may be no links between the ratings and the actual performance of the business unit.
