  5. Day 1 • Time flies. I leave at 12:30 a.m. and arrive at 5:30 a.m. the next day. • The flight is 12 ½ hours long and a little more than 6,000 miles. • All meals provided on the plane.

  6. Day 1 - continued • Round-trip airline tickets and my stay at the Capital Hotel in Beijing cost $1,250.

  7. Day 2 • Plane lands at 5:30. I take taxi to hotel and then go shopping. • At night, I have roast duck for dinner.

  8. Day 3 • I take a Beijing city tour and visit the Birdsnest (Olympic stadium), Factory 798, Zhu courtyard and a rickshaw ride.

  9. The stops • The Beijing National Stadium built for the 2008 Olympics is often called the Birdsnest. • The swimming center next to it was also built for the Olympics. • Factory 798 is know for some unusual public art.

  10. Day 4 • Classic city tour including the Forbidden City, Tian An Min Square and Temple of Heaven.

  11. The stops • The Forbidden City was built 600 years ago and was the home to China’s royal family until 1912. It is the world’s largest palace complex. • Tian An Min Square is across the street from the Forbidden City entrance and is the largest city square in the world and was the site of a major student protest in 1989. • Temple of Heaven was also built 600 years ago.

  12. Day 5 • Badaling Great Wall and Summer Palace tour.

  13. The stops • The Great Wall of China is more than 3,000 miles long – and if you put all the parts together is more than 5,000 miles long. It averages about 20 feet high and 10 feet wide. Construction began about 2,700 years ago, but continued for several hundred years until the 1500s. • Just outside of Beijing is the massive summer palace that royalty would spend time at.

  14. Day 6 • Mutianyo Great Wall and Ming Tombs.

  15. The stops • The Ming Tombs is about 30 miles from Beijing and serves as the burial location for 13 emperors from the Ming Dynasty. The buildings at the tombs now serve as museums and show items that the emperors and the others in their palace would have used and worn.

  17. Day 7 • Fly to Xian to see Terracotta Warriors at Qin Tomb

  18. The stop • While digging for a well in 1974, workers uncovered thousands of life-size warrior statues buried. Since then, bronze chariots and other items have also been found. Each terra cotta warrior is carrying one weapon and some are on horseback. They had been buried more than 2,000 years.

  19. Day 7 - continued • After returning from Xian, get on airplane home. Leave at 9 p.m. and land at home at 5:30 p.m. the same day.
