  3. Tiered Words • Tier 1: rarely need defined (baby, walk, clock)—or brief (this is a chair). • Tier 2: High frequency, across variety of areas (coincidence, absurd, industrious, fortunate). • Tier 3: Content-specific (tephra, isotope, lathe, domain…)

  8. Typical Reading/Reactions Some volcanic eruptions are explosive and violent, like those from Soufriere Hills volcano, Mount Pinatubo, and Mount St. Helens. In others, the lava quietly flows from a vent, as in the Kilauea (kihl ah WAY ah) eruptions. What causes these differences?

  9. Another Passage Two important factors control whether an eruption will be explosive or quiet. One is the amount of water vapor and other gases that are trapped in the magma. The other factor is how much silica is present in the magma. Silica is a compound composed of the elements silicon and oxygen.

  10. Have you ever shaken a soft-drink container and then quickly opened it? The pressure from the gas in the drink builds up and is released suddenly when you open the can, spraying the drink. In the same way, gases such as water vapor and carbon dioxide are trapped in magma by the pressure of the surrounding magma and rock. As magma nears the surface, there is less pressure. This allows the gas to escape from the magma. Gas escapes easily from some magma during quiet eruptions. Gas that builds up to high pressures eventually causes explosive eruptions.
