  1. All Hall Meeting May 18, 2004

  2. Agenda • What we know about the UC budget • What we know about the LHS budget • What we know about program budgets • What we know about layoffs • Equity Committee announcements • Questions and Answers

  3. What we know about the State and UC budget • May Revision of the state budget is the same for the UC, neither greater nor smaller cut. • Still has to be approved by the Legislature. • Then the campus makes its allocations • So far, going as expected.

  4. What we know about the LHS budget • Campus core cut from campus not changed so far • Attendance up in Fall, now slipping • Impact on Discovery Corner Store and Bay View Café, as well • Planning so far realistic • Accounts in deficit cannot pay program support

  5. What we know about LHSprogram budgets for 2004-05 • 2003-04 revenue targets were ambitious, some may not be met, meaning deficit or less carryforward going into next year. • Core cuts allocated this Spring were necessary. • Many first drafts had unrealistic projections, other problems to solve.

  6. Program Budgets, continued • Some have been approved for the full year, some will be reviewed quarterly, others still in revision mode. • Program support still being determined. • Program directors will know soon which category they are in if they don’t already.

  7. Good News re: Cost Savings • Laura Scudder chaired a committee that included Alev Burton, Terry Cort, Ann Destch, Deborah Martinez, Bill McGregor, and Sai Tsui; they researched all of the options for copiers and came up with a solution that will save $32,000/year, as well headache relief, which is priceless. • THANKS!

  8. Additional Kudos • Bill McGregor organized the Bulk Mailing Seminar; folks learned how to get the best possible rates, saving time and money. • THANKS!

  9. What we know about layoffs • Some academic staff have been advised that their appointments will not be renewed for next year. • Some layoffs are pending campus approval. • Some may result from completing budget planning, hearing about pending grants, etc. • All have appeal, grievance mechanisms, vary by title.

  10. Clarifying Notes • All divisions are being cut. • Core support has been cut. • Program support has been raised. • All categories of staff are affected. • Academic and staff titles. • Core-funded, revenue, and grant-funded.

  11. Concerning Notification • Had hoped to tell everyone on May 1st, but campus backups made that not possible. • Are telling people about their own situation as it becomes certain. • It’s the staff member’s right to tell others when and how they see fit. • Will make every effort to end the degree of uncertainty as soon as we can. • Nothing in this life is certain.

  12. Student & Family Programs • Ratio of managers to staff out of balance • Science Discovery Theatre not viable without extramural support • Needs to be better integrated with Public Programs • Transition planning committee being formed.

  13. LHS Equity Committee • Committee is compiling info about resources available on campus to address equity and diversity concerns. Summary of services, contact webpages and phone numbers will be distributed to all staff, and include (but not limited to): • SEADS (Staff Equity And Diversity Services) • Gender Equity and Resource Center • ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Compliance Office

  14. LHS Equity Committee • More Campus Resources : • LGBT Services • Ombudsperson Offices, academic and staff • CARE Services • Diversity Awareness Through Resources in Education • UCPD for emergencies

  15. LHS Equity Committee • Committee schedules monthly meetings, members seeking items of interest and concern from you • Committee Members: Victoria Deardorff, Manisha Hariani, Monica Slater, Elizabeth Stage, Naomi Stein, Bruce Stewart, Craig Strang, Michele Williams, José Franco and Barb Ando (co-chairs), • New members being recruited

  16. Thanks from Docents • To Terry and Ron for painting their new office • To José and the EQUALS staff for cooperation and assistance • To Jami Rollins for working on the transition of the Resource Room

  17. Congratulations! • Karen Mayfield Ingram and José Franco have completed their Master’s degrees in Mathematics Education at San Francisco State.
