  2. Direct Quotations & Indirect Quotations • Direct Quotation- Exact words or thoughts; uses quotation marks • Mary said, “I will do it for you.” • Indirect Quotation- reports the general meaning of what was said or thought; does not use quotation marks • Mary said that she would do it for me.

  4. Introductory Expression • When the speaker is identified before the words spoken. • She whispered, “My brother thinks you’re cute.”

  5. Concluding Expression • When the speaker is identified after the words spoken. • “Good going!” he shouted.

  6. Interrupting Expression • When the speaker is identified in the middle of the words spoken. • “Laura,” Janine cried, “you’re bleeding!” • “It wasn’t a lie,” Derek insisted. “My source was an eyewitness.”
