Realize 90% of nervousness doesn't show! • Most of the symptoms of nervousness, butterflies, sweaty palms, faster heart beat, etc., never show to an audience. • If you set your notes down on a podium, the audience won’t be able to see even shaky hands.
Be excited about your topic! • Otherwise no one else will be. • You are energetic= we are energetic.
People want you to succeed. • We want you to do a good job. • We want you to be interesting, informative, and entertaining. • If you mess something up, it’s okay! Just smile and laugh it off.
Be conversational. • Sound like you. • Find friends in the audience. Talk to them.
Committing Your Talk to Memory • IS A BAD IDEA. • It will make you more nervous that you’ll forget something. And if do, you’ll feel more flustered and embarrassed. • Adds more pressure.
Never, never, never, never, never write out a talk word for word! • Written & read-aloud speeches are nearly always boring. • Make brief notes on the index cards. • Spontaneity=character=interesting!
